Student Electronic Device Policy

To maintain a focused and productive learning environment, the use of electronic devices during the instructional day is strictly limited. The use of cell phones and other devices during class time interferes with teaching and disrupts student learning.

Students are permitted to bring and use electronic devices on campus; however, their use is only allowed at designated times and not during instructional hours.

Electronic devices include: cell phones, tablets, iPads, iPods, headphones/earbuds, and smartwatches.

Student Expectations

  •  Students must turn off their devices (set to airplane mode) and place them in their Yondr pouch during instructional time
  • Devices may only be used before school, during lunch, and after school
  • Devices must not be seen, heard, or used during class time
  • Students are responsible for keeping their Yondr pouch in good condition
  • Any damage to a Yondr pouch will result in a $35 replacement fee, with possible additional disciplinary action

Colorful sticky notes with words promoting teamwork and communication.

Staff & School Responsibilities

  • Teachers will review the electronic device policy and expectations with students at the beginning of the school year and during Success Seminar
  • Teachers will report all violations to the Family & Student Advisors (Mr. Brown and/or Mr. Kelly)
  • Family & Student Advisors will:
  • Document violations in PowerSchool
  • Notify school administrators
  • Contact parents/guardians and schedule conferences as needed
  • Confiscate devices when necessary; devices must be picked up by a parent/guardian

Violations & Consequences

  • 1st Violation:
Lunch detention or in-school suspension; parent/guardian is notified

  • 2nd Violation:
2-day in-school suspension; parent/guardian notification and required meeting to discuss interventions

  • 3rd Violation:
Suspension issued; parent/guardian contacted by administration; student must return with a parent/guardian for a conference with the Principal
Students may be escorted from the building if necessary. Truman Middle College reserves the right to enforce this policy for all electronic devices in alignment with Chicago Public Schools and YCCS student code of conduct.
